The average home takes roughly four months to build; Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity (CFHFH) is building five in one week. This June CFHFH is getting involved in a very special event, the 2012 Builders Blitz, which is a nationwide initiative to build, renovate or repair over 200 homes, across 25 states, in one week.

The first Builders Blitz program was started in 2006, a few years after Tom Gipson of Habitat for Humanity Wake County (NC) and member of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) came up with the idea of building five houses in one week. Since then, countless members of the NAHB have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build or renovate over 862 homes. As part of the effort locally, CFHFH is building five brand new homes for five loving families in need. The houses will be built in Habitat’s subdivision, The Cottages at Cornerstone, and construction will commence on June 2. On June 8 there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony open to the public, to honor the five families who will finally realize their dream of owning a decent affordable home.

This incredible feat is possible, thanks in large part to the professional builders of Bill Clark Homes, Clark Carolina Construction, Herrington Homes, Horizon Homes, Stevens Fine Homes and Tony Ivey Custom Homes, who have all decided to lend a hand and get involved. Without the unyielding generosity of these local professional builders and all the volunteers who dedicate their time to helping others, erecting the walls on five homes in one week would not be possible. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is and has always been, “a world where everyone has a decent place to live,” and this CFHFH and the Builders Blitz initiative will move five houses closer to making that vision a reality.

Maria has been a Habitat homeowner since May 2003 and a very willing partner since entering the program. She told the audience that up until 2003 she and her family had moved multiple times never putting down roots. To this day every time she walks into her home she gets a thrill because it is her home.

Montrina Melvin along with her daughter and son will be an owner of one of Habitat’s Blitz Builds with a closing date of June 21, 2012. She broke ground this past weekend and her daughter has already picked out the colors for her new bedroom. Montrina is very anxious become a homeowner and thanks her sister for all her support.

Pauline Miller owns a rehab house which she closed on in May 2010. She did not realized how much sweat it would take on her part to rehabilitate the house, but it was worth every drop. Her son Larry, who is member of the U.S. Marine Corps, comes home for visits every chance he gets and brings along some of his fellow Marines. Pauline looks forward to those visits and does not mind feeding the troops.

After retiring from a major pharmaceutical company as a Systems Administrator, she was looking to volunteer for an organization that helps people one person at a time and she found that Habitat was a perfect fit.

Jeanne volunteers in the administration office with various computer related tasks, and general office duties. She has met many of the future and existing homeowners as they visit the office which gives her the opportunity to see first hand the entire process of homeownership for those in need.
