Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity?
We are a Christian Housing Ministry, assisting families in the Cape Fear Region towards the purchase of a Habitat home.
Who is eligible for a Habitat for Humanity home?
Potential homeowners are selected for homeownership based on:
  1. Need: the Family Selection Committee evaluates need based on the condition of the family's present residence, overcrowded conditions, high crime area location, etc.
  2. Ability to pay a mortgage: we build single-family homes for anyone who earns 30 to 60% below the median household income. The houses are purchased by the families through a 0% interest, 30-year mortgage from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity.
  3. The willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity and to work "sweat equity" hours building Habitat homes for others as well as themselves. Habitat for Humanity helps break the cycle of renting by empowering families with the skills necessary to succeed through our Family Support Committee and Habitat homeownership classes.
If you, or someone you know, would like to be considered for one of our homes, please call our Director of Family Services at (910) 762-4744, x 103.
What kind of homes do we build?
We provide simple, decent, and affordable housing. The average home is 1,000 square feet and the cost averages $80 per square foot (approximately $80,000 per house). We build 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes. It takes approximately 16 weeks to complete a house.
Who builds these homes?
Volunteers are the driving force behind our success. Volunteers and the future homeowners work side by side to make the dream of home ownership a reality for our families. Professional contractors are used for tasks that require specific skills such as hanging dry wall, plumbing, electrical, and heating and air. We presently build on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and all day Saturday. If you can help for any amount of time, please call the Volunteer Coordinator at (910) 762-4744, x 105.
Who started Habitat for Humanity?
Millard and Linda Fuller co-founded Habitat for Humanity International in 1976. The International headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 300,000 Habitat homes have been built in the United States, Canada and 90 other countries, since 1976. There are currently 1,569 affiliates in the United States, 626 college campus chapters, and 67 affiliates in foreign countries.
How long has Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity been in existence?
Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Affiliate was founded in 1987 by Reid and Linda Murchison. The first house was built in 1989. 130 houses have been built during the past 25 years.
How long has the UNC-W Chapter been in existence?
The UNC-W Chapter of Habitat for Humanity was founded in 2002. Student volunteers conduct fundraising events, volunteer in the ReStore, and work on site helping to construct homes. If you are a UNC-W student and would like to help, please e-mail uncwhabitat@hotmail.com.
How are we funded?
We are funded by mortgage payments, house sponsors, business and corporate partnerships, groups, grants, churches, civic and fraternal organizations, individuals, memorials, honorariums, fundraising events, and ReStore revenues. If you would like a copy of our annual report, and/or if you would like to form a financial partnership with us, please call our Resource Development Coordinator at (910) 762-4744, x 102.
What does our ReStore offer?
Our ReStore is located at 1208 South Third Street, in Wilmington, NC. The store contains new and used merchandise including building supplies, home furnishings, appliances, and almost everything for the home. We do not accept clothing. The merchandise is generated by tax-deductible donations from local businesses and individuals.

Hours: Monday - SaturdAy 9:00am-5:00pm

We offer a pickup service for large items Tuesday – Friday by appointment only. To make arrangements for pick up, please call our Donations Coordinator at 910-762-4793. The proceeds from the ReStore sales offset the majority of our administrative costs.
How can you help?
We need funding for house construction. Last year, for every dollar received in donations, $.83 went directly to programming. The remaining $.17 was used for operational costs. We need land that can be donated or sold to us at a reduced price. (The difference between the selling price and market value is tax deductible.) We need building supplies, tools, etc. to reduce building costs. We need ReStore donations such as furniture, appliances, household furnishings, construction materials, etc., to sell in our ReStore. We need volunteers to help with fundraising events, ReStore duties, to serve on Committees and for home construction. Volunteering provides an opportunity for employees and groups to work “outside of the box” by sharing challenges and accomplishments. These interactions result in bonds between individuals that may not be possible to forge in a typical work setting.
